Both the Metropolitan Police and Richmond Council have angrily rejected a price comparison website’s claim that Teddington is the second most burgled hotspot in London.

MoneySuperMarket made the claim in the Evening Standard – but they based it on ‘analysis’ of home insurance quotations on their website, rather than on actual crime figures.

In fact, says the Council, Teddington has the lowest rate of residential burglary anywhere in the borough. And Superintendent Rob Applegarth of Richmond Police declared, “These figures are entirely misleading. Over the last 12 months, Teddington ward has the lowest rate of residential burglary of any ward in Richmond Borough, with 37 offences reported; a reduction of 30% over the previous year. We have recently formed a dedicated Burglary and Robbery Team in order to further bear down on burglary.”

Cllr Liz Jaeger added, “This is shameful research from the MoneySupermarket. Their claims are simply untrue. Richmond upon Thames is the fourth safest borough in London. The Richmond Community Safety Partnership, which includes the local Police and Council, have a robust strategy to tackle all aspects of crime, with new programmes and activities launched to encourage residents to be safe in all aspects of their lives.”
