• Richmond Council: weekly bin collections to continue

Richmond Council has said there are no plans to change the weekly refuse collection to fortnightly.

Across the country, a number of local authorities have changed the frequency of their waste collections, with some even moving to every three weeks. But Richmond Council is to retain a weekly collection, and over the next few months will launch a campaign to encourage more residents to consider carefully what they throw away.

At the same time, a new contract for collecting the borough’s domestic waste and recycling (currently with Veolia) will be negotiated, to start in 2020. As part of the contract, new waste and recycling collection vehicles will be sought, to ensure that collections are consistent and without delay.

Cllr Martin Elengorn, Richmond Council Cabinet Member for Environment, said, “We would only move to a fortnightly collection should the community want it. As such a change would probably only lead to a reduction in cost of about £5 per annum per household, we don’t feel there’s a prospect of it being supported.”

He added, “We need to find other ways of reducing waste and boosting our recycling figures. Already a new approach to food recycling in selected flats is proving successful and we have extended collection of small electrical goods to most of our libraries. We will continue to work hard at making recycling as easy as possible, removing barriers and improving education around the issue.”
