A festive wreath in the window of Sims Opticians in The Causeway. The countdown to Christmas has started!

The relentless rain that had fallen on Teddington all day on Thursday (December 3rd) cleared away just in time for the official lighting of the town’s main Christmas tree.

A small but enthusiastic crowd gathered to join the countdown as Cllr Richard Baker switched on the lights, joined by Munira Wilson MP and members of Teddington Together’s organising committee.

Earlier, the Landmark Arts Centre’s own Christmas tree was switched on by D’Artagnan, Teddington’s troubadour singer who has done so much during the two Lockdowns to raise everyone’s spirits. Over the months he’s visited numerous streets to give impromptu performances, much to the delight of the residents.

For obvious reasons, this year’s festivities were a muted affair. Gone were the road closures, the huge crowds, the entertainment stage and the pop-up stalls selling food, drink and presents. Even so, the spirit of Christmas this year was very much alive and well, as our photographer Peter Denton discovered on a walk from the Landmark to the Memorial Hospital. Brightly lit and beautifully decorated shop windows in the High Street and Broad Street really lifted the spirits, and were a credit to the town.

So please don’t forget… as Christmas approaches, Shop Locally!
