• Teddington in Flower 2021 – but not as you know it!

For many years now, the annual Teddington in Flower event – in which members open their back gardens for one afternoon in June in aid of local charities – has been a much loved event for local residents. However, for the second year the Covid pandemic has made this special community day practically impossible.

So this year, we’re organising something new. We’re asking everyone in Teddington with a front garden, little or large, or possibly just a window ledge, a hanging basket or two, a few plant pots or even a shop front, to exercise their green fingers with colourful and eye-catching planting.

Aim to have your display at its peak throughout the month of June, ending on the 27th, which would have been the date of the Village Fair this year (sadly another Covid casualty).

And traders! How about matching the colours of Richmond Council’s hanging street baskets, which are already brightening up the town throughout the summer? They use white and purple surfinias, red ivy leaf geraniums, salmon trailing begonias, blue scaveolas and red dragon wing begonias in their fetching street displays.

So… you can plant blooms or veg, augment your display with novelties, if you wish – anything colourful which will stop a passer-by and get an instant WOW!

And why not take a photograph of your display? We’d love to see it, so send it to gardens@tedsoc.org.uk. Or, if you’re not online, send your photo to the Teddington Society, 1 Avenue Road, Teddington TW11 0BT and we’ll publish a selection in our Tidings magazine, on Instagram and here on the website.

“Gardening is good for you, both physically and mentally” says our chairman, Sheena Harold, “and it’s good for everyone who sees your results, ranging from flower pots, tubs and hanging baskets through to full-scale colourful flower beds. Heaven knows we all need a bit of cheering up after months and months of worry – so help us put Teddington on the blooming botanical map!”
