From the current owners, June 2026: The property on this site was initially built for Mr C H Moss, a stonemason, in 1884. Richmond Council hold the original building plans. Mr Moss added highly decorated stonework in Bath stone with floral motifs to the front elevation to demonstrate his skills. The carriageway to the left hand side led to his workshop at the rear. Fronting Church Road on the right was his showroom. Mr Moss’s family occupied the rest of the house. Before WW2 the property was sold to a motor repair business, S & J Motors, and a large timber and corrugated iron workshop was built in the rear yard. They repaired invalid carriages and later cars. The house itself was rented to tenants. Many years later in 2012 the property was sold and a much needed refurbishment carried out. The garage workshop was demolished and replaced by a smaller studio and a garden. The house is now lived in by the owners. In 2017 the property was designated a Building of Townscape Merit and in 2019 the adjacent area was made a conservation area

From the 1970 Teddington Society Survey; Double-fronted (attached to No. 33) house built pre-1893 – red brick with white ornamentation. Central door with ground and first floor bays on right side. On left side is a shallow arched carriage-way to the rear. This is signposted "S & J Motors" and refers to their premises set behind and out of sight.
Property: Udney Park Pavilion

Udney Park Pavilion is located on the west side of Udney Park playing fields. It faces the field rather than the road. The pavilion is a single storey, u-shaped, mostly symmetrical structure with a later 1960s neo-Georgian style two-storey block to the north. It is of Arts and Crafts design but with many later additions. It has a main block and two projecting wings with a flat-roofed veranda on four red brick piers between the wings. It has a hipped tiled roof with two red brick chimneystacks, one featuring a mounted clock. On the front roof slope are three dormer windows. Rainwater goods are a mixture of cast-iron and replacement plastic. The walling is red brick laid in irregular bond to the pavilion and red brick laid in stretcher bond to the later block. Windows are a mixture of multi-paned metal and timber casements with timber surrounds. The later block has rubbed brick lintels with the central window having a round-headed rubbed brick arch. Both projecting wings, along with the veranda and central tile-hung dormer, have been extended and modified since the original design. Udney Park Pavilion was featured in “Smaller House, selected examples of Latest Practice in Modern Architecture” and in the 1924 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition as a result of its architectural merit.

The Pavilion was built c.1920-22 to designs of Charles Wescott Reeves and Stanley Philip Schooling as a war memorial following the Great War of 1914-18. On 31st October 1917 it was decided to fund a lasting and visible record and permanent memorial to the fallen from Merchant Taylors’ School. Funded by the War Charity along with other donations, the Merchant Taylors’ School ‘War Memorial Ground’ was opened on 27th November 1922 by Viscount Cave, then the Lord Chancellor, and former WWI Home Secretary. Two oak panels inscribed with the names of over 300 Old Boys were originally located in the tearoom, however, these were later moved to Durrants in 1937 and then again in 2011 to the clubhouse at Moors Park. In 1937, Udney Park was purchased by Lord Beaverbrook and given to St. Mary’s Medical School RFC, a renowned team who won the Hospital’s Cup a total of 32 times before they were subsumed into Imperial Medicals RFC who went on to use Udney Park from 1996-2015.

At the time of listing as a BTM (late 2021) the pavilion was not in use.
This directory is now updated and maintained by Rosemary McGlashon.

It was originally assembled by a team of Teddington Society Members. The BTM notes were prepared by Ann Miller, Gilly Hughes, Hilary Marshall & Ken Howe. Brian Bolam extracted from both Teddington Society publications & Historic England (Was English Heritage) records - with their approval & encouragement - descriptions related to Teddington's Listed Buildings. Brian also took many of the site's photographs.

The Census Transcripts were prepared by Roger Theobald, Mike Woods & Susan Ashley Blake

Colin Hicks constructed the website and provides technical assistance. The site is now maintained by The Teddington Society's web host.

Keith Atkinson co-ordinated the project. If you would like to volunteer to help or have suggestions on content please email Keith at [mailto:planning@tedsoc.org.uk planning@tedsoc.org.uk]. Additional contributions both from owners and occupiers of these very special buildings and also from all fellow Teddingtonians are most welcome!
From the Teddington Society 1970s Survey: "in the Enclosure Award of 1800, Park Lane is described as Almshouse Road, 20 ft. wide." It was listed under "Private Carriage Road". "It was known as Cage Lane in 1862 since, as well as the Almshouses, it had the village cage and round house." Originally it was a lane leading Southward over Teddington Common to a part of Hampton Common and a boundary stone exists near the junction with Queen's Road, this road being then part of Hampton parish.

The road now leads from Park Road down to Queen's Road and contains at the Park Road end a modern gated development, White Heron Mews, with entrance behind the Police Station, some council maisonettes (?1930s). Council flats were built in the 1970s on the site of the almshouses and opposite is Park Lane Stables which had formerly housed the horses for the Teddington fire engine. The rest of Park Lane are houses and cottages mostly of the 19th century.

The stables are a significant and unusual feature of Park Lane which is now primarily residential.
The stables are of vernacular design, brick built, now painted white, with an angular multi pitched slate roof. The stables were extended in the late 80’s and early 90’s to form living accommodation for the riding school proprietor. More recently, the main stable building was altered with the introduction of the black metal balcony, an upward extension of the central section of roof and addition of large plain glazed window.

The stables sit opposite a block of mid 20th century flats which replaced almshouses built in 1739, and funded by Mattias Perkins, which were demolished in the 1950’s. The stables building has been on this site since at least 1830. Then it served as the local fire station with the local horse drawn fire tender. A parish fire engine was bought in 1831 and was put in the care of the beadle. Keith Luxford started the first riding school from this site in the 1950’s. Mr Luxford was later Master Saddler to the British and Jordanian Royal families. In 2016 the stables were visited by Princess Anne.

The stables have played a central role in the community, providing horse riding lessons to disabled children. The importance of the stables to the local community was demonstrated at the beginning of 2021 when over £1 million was raised to buy the stables from the freeholder. The campaign was featured on numerous media outlets such as BBC Breakfast.
