Thomas John Elliman
Son of John Elliman and Sarah Ann Elliman née Eggington
Born 24th October 1877 at Teddington
Baptised 18th November 1877 at Christ Church, Teddington
Married Florence Ellen Elliman (formerly Duke, née Martin) in 1913.
Lived at 2 Collinsons Cottages, Victor Road, Teddington and 37 School House Lane, Teddington
Employed by Teddington Urban District Council
Enlisted at Teddington in June 1916 whilst living at South Teddington as Private (G/18939)
with the ‘Buffs’ (East Kent Regiment), 6th (Service) Battn, and later with the 7th (Service) Battn.
With them Thomas Elliman saw almost continuous action, as the Buffs were fully engaged from July 1916
onwards in actions of the Battle of the Somme. The spring of 1917 saw them again in almost unrelieved
conflict as the Allied offensive gained momentum through the battles of Arras, and then in late summer
in the actions of the Third Battle of Ypres.
On the evening of 29 September 1917, whilst the battalion was enjoying the temporary respite of a few
Training Days in Belgium, a single aircraft appeared over the camp and dropped four bombs, killing one
officer and 26 other ranks – including Thomas John Elliman, then aged 42.
Buried at Nine Elms British Cemetery, Poperinge, West Flanders, Belgium (Plot: III.B.5)
(See: Find A Grave Memorial# 13948506)
Listed on Teddington War Memorial
Commemorated on the Hampton Wick Remembers website.
