As a Leading Seaman (199405 (R.F.R.PO.B.2011) (Po) with the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, at the outbreak of war he was recalled for active service, and was engaged on coastal protection duty on an armed liner in the North Sea.

He was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal in 1915 and was killed in action when the auxiliary cruiser "Alcantara" was sunk during a battle with German raider "Greif" in the North Sea on 29 Feb 1916.
