Employed as a bricklayer, he enlisted as Private (SS/13135) with the Army Service Corps, 18th Labour Company in June 1914. In August 1914 his wife Mary Ann died, leaving behind five children, only two of whom were grown up. | |||
He drowned when the British transport ship "Royal Edward" was sunk by a torpedo from a German submarine in the Aegean Sea, near the Italian Dodecanese island of Kos, on 13th August 1915. 1,865 soldiers and crew were lost. | |||

William Gurney
