Educated at St Pauls School, Kingston Hill, Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey
Working as a butcher when he enlisted into the British Army in 1908 (as Harold William Bray)
Served in India from January 1911 to November 1914, he then joined the B.E.F. in France
