William Smith

Son of Joseph Ebenezer Smith and Fanny Smith née Charlton

Born about June 1894 at Teddington

Lived at 37 Walpole Road, Teddington

Educated at Teddington Council School

An errand boy and furniture dealer in 1911 and a dustman with Teddington U.D.C. for two years. He was the main financial support of his widowed mother and two younger brothers. Despite this, he joined the army upon the outbreak of the war and enlisted as a Private (18689) with the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), 3rd Battn.

According to a letter sent by one of his friends, Private Carter, after just one day in the trenches they were driven out of it by gas. In the attempt to retake it a number of men were killed in action, including William Smith, on Whit Monday 1915 (24 May 1915), age 21. Following his death, Teddington Council agreed to continue the allowance paid to his mother for a period of 26 weeks.
