Number 72 Cambridge Road is one of the original 52 'Shell Houses'. It was built in c. 1925 by the Royal Dutch Shell Oil Company for rental to its employees. The three or four-bedroomed terraced and semi-detached houses were built to a 'continental cottage' design by Messrs Joseph, Architects of Godliman's Street, London. The estate of houses, now occupying part of Cambridge Road, Grove Terrace and The Grove, were built on the site of Teddington Grove, an 18th-century house with extensive grounds which was demolished around 1920. The exterior and interior design of the Shell Houses, which originally contained rustic wooden features, small brick fireplaces and parquet and tiled floors, is thought to be unique. Number 72 was bought by Andrew and Diana Thorne in 1972, and inherited by their son in 2006. | |||
