Road: Hampton Road, Teddington
Property: 54, "Summerleigh"
Summerleigh at 54 Hampton Road was built in the late 1880's and was originally a private house occupied by a married couple and their servants. At one time is is thought to have housed a small music school. In the 1930's it was an annexe of Lady Eleanor Hollis school. A resident at the time remembered standing in the bathrooms on the top floor and seeing the glow in the sky from the Crystal Palace fire on the other side of London.
Yew Tree House next door (also number 54) was originally part of the school annexe housing the science labs.
By the time World War 2 was taking place Summerleigh had been converted into flats. An elderly resident who lived there for many years remembered her time working in the Operations Room at the American Base in Bushy Park. Summerleigh is also rumoured to be involved in some way in a local surveillance operation following the The Brink's-MAT robbery at Heathrow in the 1980's....!
