3 Cambridge Road

Road: Cambridge Road

Property: 1-3

This square stone-faced building containing two semi-detached houses has a mansard roof, slate tiles and square sash windows. It appears on 1873 OS map. In 1974 it was office premises, formerly part of the White House doctors’ surgery with No 3. In 2014 No 1 is named Grindlay House and is occupied by a firm of financial advisers (fpg).

No 1 Cambridge Road (The Lodge) appears to be flush with the road, and appears to have a large garden to the side which was in 1978 the yard for a removals firm. In 2013 Nos 1 & 3 Cambridge are on this site, and the open space behind is the car park for Marks & Spencer. The main access to the car park is through an alleyway off the High Street, but there is also an entrance on Cambridge Road.

No 3 has rectangular sash windows with pediments, a hipped roof, decorated pediment over the main door, curtain wall to the garden with side door inserted. Wrought iron verandah on the garden front, and small wrought iron balconies on first floor windows. Roundel with classical head on the roof pediment, maybe a mask of the builder Mr Nurse (who built the Oxford and Cambridge Villas on the High Street). The heads are said to be based on the features of his workmen. It was formerly owned by a Miss Nurse. In 1974 it was owned by a removals firm, which used the garden and grounds behind the house and the pub as a park. In 2014, now named Jacaranda House, the house appears to be residential property and the land behind is the car park for Marks & Spencer’s. The main access to the car park is through a passageway from the High Street.
