High Street 87

Road: High Street, Teddington
Property: 87
The cottages behind the shop are thought to date back to the 16th century. In 1800 there were two houses with gardens on this site and they belonged to Mr George Bird. There are now two houses set back from the road in front of which is a shop which takes up most of the frontage leaving only a pathway to the houses behind it.
In the 1980s the two houses were refurbished and were advertised as sixteenth century cottages but this age cannot be confirmed in the records. It is known that at least four families were living on this site in the 1840s and the property is described as four cottages. The older houses may have been divided.
Miss Elizabeth Bird, the daughter of the owner, who occupied the cottage on the adjacent site, no. 85 at one time, was a prep school mistress in 1851 and it is thought that the building in front of the two cottages may have been her school.
