Langham Road, "The Church Hall"

Road: Langham Road
Property: "The Church Hall"
St Mary with St Alban's Parish Hall, (formerly St Alban's Parish Hall) was built in the 1880s. By the 1970s St Alban's Church was closed, and the 16th century St Mary's Church across the road was restored, and once again became the parish church. In the late 19th century, money was left by parishoners for the completion of St Alban's. As the church was never finished, the money remained in probate for almost 100 years. The parish hall was, by the 1980s, very dilapidated, and could not be used for church activities. The Charity Commissioners would not allow the money to be used for the hall, until the then Vicar, the Rev. John Cleaver, asked the Bishop of London to intervene. This resulted in the money being released, which amounted to the princely sum of £400,000, due to he accumulation of 100 years of interest, on what had been relatively modest legacies. Some of this money was donated to the renovation of St Alban's as an Arts Centre, now known as the Landmark Centre, and the rest used for the renovation of the hall. St Mary's Parish Hall is now a splendid building with excellent facilities, which is now used for many activities, and can be hired by contacting the [parish website of St Mary with St Alban].
