"Ground floor is of brightly painted plaster, while the upper storey is of yellow brick with red decoration. Near the top of the building (which appears to be flat-roofed) bricks are set edgewise to form a pattern. There is reputed to be an original stables block still standing behind the pub." TeddSoc 1975.
In 1881, The Lion was run by Herbert Cowan, Licensed Victualler, aged 56, who lived there with his wife Julia, another relative and a servant.
In 1891, The Lion was occupied by William Page, aged 40, Licenced Victualler, and his wife Mary and 3 daughters, Florence, Beatrice and Grace, aged 8, 6 and 4 months.
In 1901, The Page family was still there. William was described as a publican, and they had two more children and a nephew living with them.
NOTE In 1901, there was another beerhouse in Schoolhouse Lane called The Eagle which was run by Willem G Gent, Beer retailer, aged 45, born in Beckenham, Kent, who lived there with his wife Eliza, aged 41, and their son Ernest aged 21 who was an electrical turner, and their daughter Barbara aged 11.
