In 1881 The Lion was run by Herbert Cowan, Licensed Victualler, aged 56, who lived there with his wife Julia, another relative and a servant.

Near the top of the building (which appears to be flat-roofed) bricks are set edgewise to form a pattern. There is reputed to be an original stables block still standing behind the pub."
